1. Your Resume (or ‘CV’)
Ensure you have carefully read our Resume Format in
Canada section before sending your resume to employers. Poorly
written resumes will hinder you from making an impact. Read these tips
carefully, ensure you understand the objective, and apply these simple concepts
to help your resume impress an employer. Your resume is the all-important first
impression, so don’t fall short at this crucial first step when applying for
jobs in Canada.
When you’re called for an interview, prepare using our
article on the 57 interview questions you could be asked. If you’d like a
professional to review your resume and point out where it could be improved,
consider our Resume Evaluation service.
2. Be selective
In many professions, responding to ads in the paper and
over the internet are the least effective ways to find jobs in Canada. Be
selective in your job search. Do not blanket bomb 30 companies with
the same resume and cover letter, as managers in companies talk. This is a
common mistake that people make. Networking, cold calling,
and informational interviews are much more effective ways to
distribute your resume.
Imagine you are a HR hiring manager working for Tata
Consultancy Services in Delhi. You have a job available and you receive 20 resumes.
19 are from HR professionals with great experience and fit the requirements,
and they all live in Delhi. One is from a HR professional with great experience
and fits the requirements, and she lives in Canada. Would you hire the
Canadian?
Please don’t waste your time applying for jobs on the online
boards. Your resume is either not being looked at all, or is being tossed
aside. Unless your skills on paper are so rare and exceptional and no one else
living in Canada applying for the same job has it, you have no chance of
securing a job in Canada this way.
When I was job interviewing, one question that was always
asked at the interview “Are you legally allowed to work in Canada?” The answer
is “Yes” only if:
- You
are a citizen
- You
are a permanent resident
- You
have an open work permit
If you are living in India, you are neither of these things.
You are legally not allowed to work in Canada!
Cities with the most jobs in Canada include Toronto,
Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver. An interest in a finance career will most
likely take you to Toronto, oil and gas experience will lead you to Calgary,
Montreal is great for those with a French-speaking background and Vancouver is
for those who believe in eco-friendly industries. Of course there are many
other vibrant cities you can choose to work, stay or play in. A little research
might be required to find out which is best for you.
Another popular option for jobs in Canada is working in the
ski and snowboarding industry with popular resorts such as Banff and Whistler
crying out for new applicants year after year. If this sounds like something
